The UK hopes further AI investment will cement its status as a world leader, with Technology Secretary Peter Kyle currently in the US to promote Britain’s credentials.

Kyle’s visit comes as the UK government scrambles to plug AI into its “Plan for Change,” and also when the UK’s special “relationship” with the US has come under particular strain in recent years.

Speaking at NVIDIA’s annual conference in San Jose on March 20, Kyle described the government’s plan to “rewire” the British economy around A. The initiative aims to share the wealth-creating power of artificial intelligence beyond traditional hotspots such as Silicon Valley and London, helping communities across the UK to seize opportunities created by the new technology.

Speaking to business leaders, developers and other innovators, the Technology Secretary outlined how the UK can use AI and cutting-edge technologies to address some of the world’s biggest challenges and establish itself as a home of innovation.

The UK government is already using AI technology to transform public services and drive economic growth as part of its ‘Plan for Change’.

Kyle now points out the huge potential of the UK’s AI sector, which is worth more than $92bn and is forecast to be worth control of $1 trillion by 2035. According to this growth trajectory, the gov’t will make Britain the second leading AI nation in the democratic world, creating several investable opportunities for US companies and financial institutions.

The core message of Kyle’s message is the receptivity of the UK to AI investment, especially when it comes to “turning the relics of economic eras past into the UK’s innovative AI Growth Zones.”

These “AI Growth Zones” are a major part of the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan. They are special areas designed to quickly facilitate investment in AI research and industry, by relaxing regulations and providing essential infrastructure.

AI Growth Zones, as the name implies, are exciting hotbeds of AI innovation with a new pipeline of opportunities for companies to scale and innovate. The Technology Secretary is also actively seeking to entice investors into this new partnership.

Kyle is likely to elaborate on how these Growth Zones the availability of significant power connections and a planning system geared towards accelerating construction will enable a scale of compute infrastructure “the UK has never seen before,” in his speech at the NVIDIA conference.

The government has already received hundreds of bids from local leaders and industry figures across the UK, showcasing Britain’s ambition to harness AI to rejuvenate communities and turbo-charge the UK economy as a whole.

This is set to ensure high living standards are promoted and maintained across the UK, one of the government`s key priorities over the next four years. The purpose of the AI Growth Zones is to provide the economies, investment and the flourishing business environment needed to enhance the wealth of citizens and deliver on the “Plan for Change.”

And at the NVIDIA conference Kyle is expected to say: “In empty factories and abandoned mines, in derelict sites and unused power supplies, I see the places where we can start to build a new economic model. A model utterly transformed by the staggering capabilities of artificial intelligence.

“Where, in the face of that power, the state is neither a blocker nor a shirker, but an agile, proactive partner. In over here in Britain, we seek to transform the vestiges of economic centuries gone by into AI Growth Zones.”

Peter Kyle will also meet with leading companies in the tech sector, including OpenAI, Anthropic, NVIDIA, and Vantage as part of his visit to the US. His ambition is to attract more of these businesses to the UK and make it their “Silicon Valley home from home”.

In addition, the Technology Secretary will be expected to say: “There is a genuine thirst for investment in Britain, as well as people who are hopeful about the future and the possibilities AI will open up for them and their families. States have an obligation to their citizens to endorse it, too. Not by diktat or directive, but by partnership.”

It comes against a backdrop of AI being at the top of the transatlantic agenda, with the UK prime minister and US president treating the technology as the defining issue of our time. During a visit to the White House in September, the Prime Minister confirmed that the two countries are working together on a new economic deal with advanced technologies at the heart of it.

Since the UK laid out its new AI strategy at the start of the year when it made the technology a central pillar of the government’s ‘Plan for Change’, the country has already seen US companies – and others – investing big to set up AI bases in Britain.

Among the recent significant investments announced was Vantage Data Centers’ plan to invest £12 billion to increase Britain’s data infrastructure, creating around 11,500 jobs. Last month, the UK Government also formalised a partnership with Anthropic to deepen cooperation on the use of AI for bettering public services across the country.

With the UK’s AI sector set for continued growth as the government works towards removing barriers to innovation, these partnerships with leading US tech firms and investors can be further strengthened.
