AI Seoul Summit: Advancing AI Safely and Responsibly

AI Seoul Summit: Advancing AI Safely and Responsibly

On May 21 and 22, the UK and South Korea will share hosting duties for the AI Seoul Summit. By building on the collaborative framework established by the Bletchley Declaration, this summit seeks to provide the ground for the safe development of artificial intelligence technology.

The two-day program will include an in-person gathering of Digital Ministers after a virtual leaders’ session co-chaired by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The latter will be co-hosted by Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho and UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan.

With an emphasis on AI safety, inclusivity, and creativity, this summit expands on the historic Bletchley Park debates that took place at the iconic venue in the UK last year. It seeks to guarantee that developments in AI benefit humanity while reducing possible hazards and improving international regulation of technological innovation.

Donelan said, “The summit we held at Bletchley Park was a generational moment.” “I have every confidence that we can continue to develop a global approach which will allow us to realize the transformative power of this generation-defining technology safely and responsibly if we continue to bring international governments and a broad range of voices together.”

Minister Lee Jong-Ho echoed this attitude when he emphasized the significance of the Seoul Summit in advancing international collaboration on AI safety and innovation.

“Global norms and governance must be established to harness these technological innovations to improve the welfare of humanity, as AI is advancing at a pace that surpasses our expectations,” said Lee. “We hope that the AI Seoul Summit will provide a platform to advance sustainable AI development and strengthen international cooperation on AI safety, innovation, and inclusion.”

The UK continues to place a high priority on innovation, as demonstrated by the establishment of the AI Safety Institute, the first government-backed organization devoted to AI safety, and the Manchester Prize. This proactive strategy is consistent with the UK’s dedication to global cooperation on AI governance, which is demonstrated by a recent agreement on AI safety measures reached with the US.

The publication of the International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety will coincide with the Seoul Summit. Yoshua Bengio, the winner of the Turing Prize, led an independent team that compiled the best available scientific research on AI safety for this paper. It emphasizes the summit’s function as a conversation platform as well as a source of practical knowledge about the responsible advancement of AI.

The urgency of tackling the potential and problems posed by AI is reflected in the agenda of the AI Seoul Summit. From encouraging sustainable AI development to talking about model safety reviews. The AI Seoul Summit is a concerted effort to design a future where technology serves mankind safely and delivers wealth and equality for all, as the globe embraces AI innovation.
